Current burnout inventories are, in our humble opinion, either too narrow or lacking some major indicators of succeptibility to stress and burnout. We are missing a focus on early detection, rather than diagnostics once symptoms are impossible to ignore.

Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI)
The MBI is a psychological assessment instrument comprising 22 symptom items pertaining to occupational burnout. The original form of the MBI was developed the goal of assessing an individual's experience of burnout. The MBI measures three dimensions of burnout: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment.
Bergen Burnout Inventory (BBI)
The Bergen Burnout Inventory, 9 items (BBI; Feldt et al., 2014) measures burnout in the work context (in all occupations), assessing 1. exhaustion at work (emotional component), 2. cynicism toward the meaning of work (cognitive component), and 3. the sense of inadequacy at work (behavioral component).
Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI)
The CBI consists of three scales measuring; 1. personal burnout 2. work-related burnout, and 3. client-related burnout, for use in different domains.
The existing burnout inventories rate people based on their experience of exhaustion, detachment and decreased work efficacy. While the scoring does help identify whether a person is in burnout, they do not provide insights into why the person burns out.
Recent studies show that there are psychological personality traits that predispose people to experiencing burnout. In accordance with current inventories, the Unlearn Burnout Assessment can be used to diagnose burnout as well as highlight the traits and behaviors which can be targeted to prevent burnout, improve recovery and prevent relapse.
